Aggreko Inaugurates 100 MW Power Plant in Tanzania
24th October, 2011 Ubungo, Tanzania: Aggreko,
the world leader in the provision of temporary power plants and temperature control services, officially
inaugurated two 50 MW power plants, located at
Ubungo and Tegeta, at a special ceremony with Tanzania Electric
Supply Company (TANESCO) on Monday, 24th October.
The power plant inauguration was
attended by senior officials from both companies and with a guest
of honour, the Hon. Adam Kighoma Ali Malima, Deputy Minister of
Energy and Minerals for the Government of Tanzania.
Guests were welcomed by TANESCO’s Deputy Managing Director,
Boniface Njombe, and Kash Pandya, Managing Director, Aggreko
International. Adam Kighoma Ali Malima provided the keynote speech,
discussing the importance of the power plants in
helping to support the rapid economic growth of Tanzania.
As more than two-thirds of Tanzania’s electricity comes from
hydro-powered power plants, recent droughts in
East Africa have heavily affected the amount of electricity being
produced, resulting in regular load shedding and power rationing.
Aggreko was awarded the contract to
provide 100 MW of power to TANESCO in June 2011, and has been
working closely with the company in order to deliver the
power plants as quickly as possible. Both
power plants were fully commissioned by October
20th, significantly in advance of the contracted commissioning
dates.
Boniface Njombe, Deputy Managing Director, TANESCO, said: “This
is a significant milestone in the future economic growth of the
country. It provides us with the necessary resources to fuel the
increasing demand for power, as we work towards a long-term
solution for power generation and distribution.”
Kash Pandya, Managing Director, Aggreko International, added:
“Aggreko has worked closely with TANESCO and the Ministry of Energy
and Minerals in order to provide a fully comprehensive solution,
quickly and efficiently. Having delivered power
plants to TANESCO between 2006 and 2008, we are delighted
to be working with the team once again.”
