South Africa - 21 February 2011: Aggreko, the world leader in the provision of temporary power and temperature control services, has been awarded its first temperature control project in South Africa. Since mid-December 2010, Aggreko has been providing 3000 kWr of cooling to Harmony Gold Mine Co. Ltd’s Phakisa Mine in Odendaalsrus in Free State Province.
Within South Africa’s mining industry, health and safety is a top priority. Underground mines can be damp and humid, and working in high temperatures can put people’s health at risk. By ensuring that their employees are not exposed to high temperatures, mining companies can greatly reduce the risk of heat illness, as well as maintaining production levels.
For this reason, the management at Phakisa Mine has installed ice-plant cooling packages, and is in the process of installing underground chilled water plants, which are scheduled for completion in October 2011. The Aggreko temporary cooling package, which was commissioned in mid-December, will remain operational at the mine until all the permanent cooling packages are brought on-line. As a turn-key service provider, Aggreko is providing all aspects of the cooling package, including design, mobilisation, installation and operation. A team of Aggreko technicians is providing assistance to Harmony Gold and is on stand-by 24 hours a day to ensure that the temperatures inside the mine remain below the legal requirement.
James Shepherd, Managing Director, Aggreko South East Africa, said: “This contract is a huge development for Aggreko’s operations in South Africa as it will be the first temperature control project undertaken by Aggreko in the country. We are delighted to be putting the team’s technical capabilities in temperature control into action and are confident that our world-wide mining experience will enable us to deliver an effective solution for the customer.”
Marius De Leeuw, project design engineer at Harmony Gold Mine Co. Ltd said: “Health and safety is something we take very seriously, which is why we have brought in Aggreko to provide us with a turn-key package which can be delivered quickly to the mine. The knowledge and experience Aggreko can provide in this area will play an integral part in the operation of the mine until the in-house cooling system is operational next year.”
