2002 FIFA World Cup Korea / Japan
Aggreko were chosen by the Japan Organising Committee as the
sole supplier of temporary electrical power
generation and distribution for the
10 world Cup venues in Japan. The 23MW contract won by Aggreko,
provided power to media broadcasting equipment, floodlights and
scoreboard systems during the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan
finals.
Generators, fuel tanks and power distribution
Working in conjunction with MyEnergy, the electrical consultants
appointed by JAWOC, Aggreko designed a system with a high level of
redundancy and supplied a comprehensive package of generators, bounded fuel
tanks and electrical power distribution
systems at each stadium, including each camera and commentary
position.
Working closely with the engineering teams in Japan to design,
install and operate dedicated power systems for each stadium, and
having completed the design, we provided a total of 34 generators
plus specialist distribution equipment and more than 100 km of
cable for the event. Also supplied were engineers to operate and
maintain the equipment to ensure another flawless performance at
the World Cup finals.
The benefits to the customer
The planning process for the World Cup contracts spanned 18
months. A team from JAWOC and MyEnergy also visited the Aggreko
base in Jebel Ali, UAE to inspect the equipment and facilities
there. The 10 World Cup host venues in Japan where Aggreko supplied
power included: Sapporo, Miyagi, Niigata, Ibaraki, Saitama,
Yokohama, Shizuoka, Kobe, Osaka and Oita. The games concluded with
the final match at Yokohama on June 30.
With such widespread locations in Japan, we also carefully
planned the movements of our staff to ensure that we operated as
efficiently as possible and had the appropriate resources available
at each location. Aggreko is experienced in handling multi-site
projects within a country, and this is another area of our
expertise.
